The Ar tonelico 2 Relocalization Project, also known as Project Metafalica, is the fan-made project that was carried out to relocalize and debug Ar tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica. The official website for the project is located at at2.metalbat.com

The project's logo, also found in the game's boot-up screen.

History

Antecedents

Ar tonelico 2: Melody of Metafalica was released in Japan on October 25th to general praise and acclaim due to the marked improvements it made over its predecessor, which also led to it being localized by NIS America. However, some fans felt that the game wasn't being localized properly from the previews NIS America was sending to several gaming sites and magazines, and their fears were confirmed to be true once the game was officially released in North America on January 20th, 2009.

The official localization had mistranslated several story scenes, distorted some characters' stories and personalities, mistranslated the in-game glossary, broke several graphical effects and assets, and introduced multiple bugs, the most infamous of them being the Fractal Change bug in the last of the story-mandated battles with Raki, as well as all successive sparring battles with her, which caused the game to crash whenever she used her scripted Fractal Change skill on the battle's third Defense Phase. Not helping matters either was NIS America also marketing the game as raunchier and more fanservice-filled than its predecessor in their marketing campaigns and interviews.

The Project Starts

This led the A Reyvateil's Melody community, led by one of their amateur translators, aquagon, to organize themselves and begin making efforts on redoing the localization after a hacker, asmodean, published independently a fix for the Fractal Change bug as well as tools for working with the event files used by the game, on January 29th, 2009. The team also decided to utilize the Undub version that was released on January 23rd of the same year by somebody special as the basis for the project, as the retranslated script would not match the English voices, and it was also discovered the English voice setting caused flag problems when it came to unlocking the anime FMVs in the Extras menu.

asmodean's programs were used as the basis by a fan and programmer, Morganite, to make additional tools for working with the game text, who also set up a wiki for documenting the game data and the tools used to work with it. She was later joined by Cless, from Phantasian Productions, who helped with deciphering the text in the game's executable and dumping it into a suitable format for the insertion tool Atlas, and by TerraBreaker, who deciphered the graphics and video formats used by the game and how to edit them, especially the trickier graphics that used multiple CLUTs or had complex palettes.

On the translation front, three translators worked together in relocalizing the scripts: aquagon, fetjuel, and kWhazit, with fetjuel also hosting the website for the project even nowadays.

Initially, the scripts were going to be edited by community members Deciare and Ayulsa, but as they ultimately stepped down from the project, they were edited by a member that joined on November 25th, 2010: void, who also helped reworking the hacking tools the team was already using, figuring out the cause behind the crashes and freezes in the modified events, and discovering how to handle the texts in the ERX overlay executables, as well as fixing several bugs present in the base game.

The graphics edits were initially done by Kari, but she ultimately left the project and the remainder of the work on the graphics, as well as the videos, was done by Soukyuu.

Work on the project was slow but steady, and the team finally released their first beta patch in November 24th, 2013. However, there still were some issues they had been unable to correct regarding the graphics, as well as there still being bugs present from both the original Japanese release as well as the localization, and it seemed the team would be unable to do more than they had already done.

However, things changed after aquagon contacted RyleFury from Atelier Traduction, impressed by the fan translations he had made of Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana and Mana Khemia: Alchemists of Al-revis to French. RyleFury agreed to help with the remainder of the bug-fixing work, and he joined the team on April 14th, 2016, also making multiple additions to the game under the request of the team.

After testing all the fixes and modifications multiple times, the project finally reached its conclusion and its final 1.0 patch was released on December 29th, 2016.

List of Changes

Script

With the exception of a few lines that the team deemed as good enough, the entirety of the game script has been retranslated from scratch using the original Japanese script as its basis, and it also underwent several editing passes in order to smooth out typos, grammar mistakes, storyline, terminology, capitalization and world setting inconsistencies, as well as giving each character a proper voice.

Videos

All the videos in the game that feature any sort of text or voice acting have been properly subtitled for players to understand what happens during them. The only exception to this is the Dolby Surround audio version of the opening video, as it remained in Japanese because there were no available tools that could remux the surround (.ac3) audio with the subtitled video at the time the patch was being made, and the official localization had also damaged that video, rendering the version from the localization unsuitable for use.

The introductory sequence that has Reisha’s Lullaby playing over it was remade to restore the part where the game logo appears, as the localization removed that part and thus broke the synchronization the video had with the song.

Voices

All the English voices were removed due to the flag-related problems they caused in the Extra menu, due to their space being used to re-render the subtitled videos in order to improve their quality, and due to them not matching the script anymore. Instead, the Japanese voices were restored to how they were in the Japanese version, and additionally, the voices for the scenes where EXEC_METAFALICA/. and METHOD_IMPLANTA/. are sung were restored as well, which used special routines that the first undub version that was available didn’t manage to restore.

Graphics

All graphics have been updated to fit the changed names for places and characters. Similarly, the problems that came from several images having their alpha channels and/or CLUTs corrupted were fixed.

Additions

A large amount of additional content was added to the game, all of which, excepting for the Hard Mode, was found as dummied-out texts and scenes that weren’t available even in the Japanese version.

  • Addition of the Hard Mode, which involves the following:
    • All enemy stats were increased.
    • Some enemy attack patterns were adjusted.
    • The guard timing leniency given by the Guard+ family of Girl Power skills that some IPDs bestow was reduced.
    • The boost given by Replekia to Song Magic was greatly reduced due to being changed from exponential to lineal.
  • A manual linebreak was inserted in the “Obtained/Gained” texts for items and Leaf to make them nicer to read.
  • Several font characters were modified to improve readability and reduce space usage.
  • Most skipped dialogues in multiple events were restored. This includes the voiceovers these lines had in the case they were voiced.
  • The Hymmnos font was reprogrammed so uppercase and lowercase letters can be displayed in the same text window, and the glyphs from its 1.1 version were added in.
  • The song “Emptiness” was added to the Hymnos Concert menu accessible under Extras. The comments for it were written by aquagon based on hearsay about the song's origins.
  • A second Deathlandia map graphic was added for Luca, as originally both Deathlandia versions used the same map graphic: the one for Cloche’s version. Similarly, both map graphics were edited to fix punctuation issues.
  • The dummied-out events for repeating lost battles in Jakuri’s Cosmosphere were reinstated.
  • All the monster descriptions that remained only as unused text in the Japanese version were translated and reinstated into the game’s bestiary.
  • The dummied-out events (one for each route) that allow players to access Deathlandia again from Lakra in Phase 5 were reinstated.
  • The dummied-out event that allows Shun to teleport the party to the Moon Culvert entrance after Reisha is abducted was reinstated.
  • The missing tutorial events for the Heroine Topics, Synchronity, Evolved Song Magic and the second missing half of the Jamming tutorial were reinstated. Similarly, the entries for them and for “Skill Levels” in the Tutorial menu were made available again.
  • Dummied-out events that show the shopkeepers berating the party if they haven’t synthesized in a long time at their corresponding shop were added back.
  • Events where Skycat/Sasha show concern about Luca/Cloche being absent from the party (depending on route) were added back.
  • All the dummied-out shop events with Cynthia were added back.
  • The dummied-out barriers and switches that were supposed to exist in the Gyro Stabilizer and the Tower to the Heavens were added back.
  • A mini dummied-out event was added back to Cloche’s Cosmosphere Lv. 1 in the Abyssal Darkness point. This disappears after the second event in the Tower of Life.
  • An event in which Cloche gets angry and the Song Magic tutorial is skipped was added back. It can be activated by refusing to attempting to close the Song Magic menu three times during the first tutorial battle with Cloche in the party.
  • Several prototype events that couldn’t be integrated into the game due either to storyline conflicts, design and structure clashes, or unknown requirements, were added under an extra Prototypes section accessible under Extras.
  • An event that existed in the game in Jakuri’s Lv. 7-C Cosmosphere but was unavailable due to an oversight on part of the developers was made available: it was moved from the inaccessible Stonehenge to the Tower of Life in that level.

Bugfixes

Multiple bugs that were in the game got fixed, either introduced during the localization, or that were already present in the original Japanese release.

  • Some of the area names that appear next to the Encounter Bar were pushed a bit to the left, so they don’t leave the screen’s limits.
  • The Deathlandia maps had their unveiling sequences restored to how they were in the JP version, as well as the new area notification appearing now.
  • All Song Magic and skills are now capable of dealing multiple types of elemental damage at once, and all incorrect elemental damage and extra effects in both skills and items have been fixed.
  • The bug that caused the “Crash…” effect to appear in the Cosmospheres during a DP event while still allowing the player to continue unless they had double the amount of DP needed to complete the event was fixed.
  • The Boss Key feature was restored in full, displaying the five illustrations it’s supposed to now.
  • The incorrect Hymn Crystal sprites for the EXEC_METAFALICA/. download flashback sequences were changed to the one used for the proper crystal.
  • The flag problems that made it impossible to unlock the voiced FMVs in the Extras menu were solved by removing the language selection option entirely from the game. This causes no problems due to the fact the English voices had already been taken out.
  • An extra fix to Raki’s Fractal Change skill: now in addition to causing one of the four Jamming types at random, it also changes Raki’s stats and attack patterns between five possible profiles. This is the way the skill originally worked in the Japanese version.
  • Infel’s diary does not disappear anymore if the player doesn’t visit Promise Hill during Phase 4.
  • Sasha was removed from the crowd in the introductory event to the Tower to the Heavens and her NPC form was also removed from the entrance to that same location due to causing a continuity error when she appears and talks to the party upon their return from Sol Marta after the final battle. The only line she got as an NPC was reassigned to an NPC girl.
  • The bug that caused the Replekia tutorial to be interrupted if the player started with a Blue song magic and then changed to Red song magic, forcing the player to reset the game, was corrected.
  • The bug that made it impossible to continue progressing through Cloche’s Cosmosphere if the player gets kicked out during the Lv. 4 introduction event due to insufficient DP was corrected.
  • The display for the Sync Rate each of the three heroine pairs have was changed to display the true Sync Rate as gotten from the Heroine Topics. The original release used a fake value that didn’t actually factor in the calculations for the Synchronity Chains.
  • The barricade event for Cloche’s Imperial was fixed. While in the base game the barrier disappeared and let the player inside a version of Imperial where no events could be triggered if they tried returning to it after seeing the barrier for the fiest time, now the event will just loop itself until the player has completed Lv. 3 of the Infelsphere.
  • The event where Amarie gives a hint to the party about the Sphilial Pose in Cloche’s Route can now be triggered. In the official release, this was impossible due to the event having impossible to fulfill conditions.
  • The graphical bug that caused the encounter bar to refill itself after using the Funbun’s Crisis! item and triggering an event, yet still making it impossible to encounter monsters until the player left the area and returned or used a Curse of Geugo item was fixed.
  • The purple portal in Dreamy Fields was changed, so it only appears after Shun activates it at the start of Phase 4.
  • The circling light effect that appears at the top left of the Infelsphere Lv. 5 map after Nostalgic Home has been cleared was removed.
  • The status ailment blocking property that Soothing Incense was supposed to have now works properly.
  • Enemies can’t be healed through damage overflow anymore.
  • The “new destination available” jingle doesn’t play twice anymore when the “False World” location unlocks in Deathlandia.
  • The green nameplates located behind the enemy names in the battle menu now are drawn to fit the length of the names.
  • The “Effect Change” property given by the Dualithnode Crystals won’t nullify the damage of the Super Moves anymore.
  • The arrows that go from the textboxes to the character sprites now point to their speakers correctly when the sprites are lying on a bed.
  • The “x” that marks the number of dropped items in the post-battle window was placed more to the right to avoid it from running into the longer item names.
