Flip-Flop Conversion (フリップフロップ変換, furippufuroppu henkan?) is the name of the technique used to convert physical matter into data, and data into physical matter. This technique consists of transforming Dynamic D-Waves into Static D-Waves, which can be summarized as a conversion of energy into matter, and also of matter into energy.[1]

This conversion is part of the principle that allows the manifestation of Song Magic into the physical world[2], and it also sees application in the teleporters and warp gates that can be found throughout Ar Ciel. Additionally, advanced digital life forms like some of Mir's Viruses and Shun can also employ Flip-Flop Conversion to either render themselves intangible and impervious to attacks, or to move instantly from a place to another through the Symphonic Power lines that run through the Towers.

It also must be noted that given its close relationship to Song Magic, Flip-Flop Conversion can be disrupted by techniques and technologies that would impair Song Magic, the best example of this being the Hymmnos Extract EXEC_PURGER/., which has the function of terminating the energy supply to a Flip-Flop Conversion or Song Magic process.

Trivia

  • The name of the technique comes from the flip-flop programming concept, in which a boolean value can change from true to false when a first condition is met, and from false to true when a second condition is fulfilled, and which persistently stores the status of the boolean value.
  • The name also makes reference to a similar concept in electronics, in which they are circuits with two stable values that can store information.
